Pirates place Ke'Bryan Hayes on 10-day IL with back sprain, recall INF Kevin Padlo
The back spasms that prevented Ke’Bryan Hayes from playing in San Francisco forced the Pittsburgh Pirates to place the third baseman on the 10-day injured list Tuesday.
Hayes appeared to aggravate his back when he was running out a grounder that resulted in a double play to end the seventh inning of a 9-3 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks on Aug. 11.
Hayes, who leads Pirates players in games started (103), is slashing .251/.323/.358 with 18 doubles, three triples, six home runs and 35 RBIs and leading all major-league third basemen with 16 defensive runs saved. His injury is listed as retroactive to Aug. 13 with a mid-back muscle strain, which makes him eligible to return from the IL next Tuesday against Atlanta.
“Nothing really changed. That was the problem,” Pirates manager Derek Shelton said. “It just didn’t get any better. We had to get him on the IL and make sure we get another body here.”
Rodolfo Castro will make his fourth consecutive start at third base in place of Hayes.
The Pirates recalled infielder Kevin Padlo from Triple-A Indianapolis, and he will start at first base and bat fifth Tuesday night against the Boston Red Sox at PNC Park.
Padlo, 26, was claimed off waivers from the Seattle Mariners on Aug. 6 and optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis, where he went 8 for 15 (.533) with two doubles, a home run and six RBIs in four games.
The 6-foot-2, 210-pounder adds a right-handed bat who can play either corner infield position to a lineup in need of both. Padlo has a .143 batting average in 20 major-league games, going 2 for 10 in six games with the Mariners and 2 for 12 in four games for the Giants.
Padlo slashed .229/.323/.371 with six doubles, a triple, four homers and 20 RBIs in 38 games for Seattle’s Triple-A affiliate in Tacoma and .275/.333/.600 with three doubles, a triple, seven homers and 16 RBIs in 22 games for San Francisco’s Triple-A affiliate in Sacramento.
“When I got the call and found out I was coming to the Pirates, I was definitely excited to be given another shot,” Padlo said. “I definitely thanked them as soon as I got the call, saying, ‘Thank you for another opportunity.’ It’s always a good feeling to get claimed or have another opportunity.”
Shelton also announced right-handed pitcher Roansy Contreras will start Wednesday against the Red Sox. Contreras was 3-2 with a 3.78 ERA in 50 innings over 12 appearances (nine starts) for the Pirates this season before being shut down at midseason. He built back up at Indianapolis, tossing five innings at Memphis on Aug. 11.
“We’ll still monitor where he’s at because I think he’s thrown four innings and five innings in his last two starts,” Shelton said. “We’re going to monitor him and our starters the rest of the way because we are going to get to the point where innings are going to become an issue. It’ll be more based on what he’s done in his last two starts down there.”
