Pirates place Ke'Bryan Hayes on injured list, insert third baseman Jared Triolo into starting lineuip
Pittsburgh Pirates third baseman Ke’Bryan Hayes, who missed the past two games with lower back stiffness, was placed on the 10-day injured list.
The transaction is retroactive to Sunday, the first game Hayes missed.
Hayes appeared in 74 of the Pirates’ first 78 games, recording a slash line of .254/.290/.397, with five home runs and 32 RBIs. The injury lingered toward the end of the recently completed road trip.
“It had been bothering him, and he had been stiff and it just hadn’t gotten better,” manager Derek Shelton said. “It got to the point where we had to give it a little bit of rest. He did some hitting (Tuesday), and it just didn’t respond to it.”
In a corresponding move, the Pirates recalled third baseman Jared Triolo from Triple-A Indianapolis. Triolo, the Pirates’ second-round draft choice in 2019, was hitting .293/.403/.436 for Indianapolis, with one home run and 20 RBIs in 37 games. He missed some time at the outset of the season with a hamate bone injury of the wrist.
He will start at third base and bat eighth Wednesday night against the San Diego Padres at PNC Park.
Triolo, 25, received the news from Indians manager Miguel Perez at 1:30 Wednesday morning and woke up a few hours later to begin the 5 1/2-hour drive to Pittsburgh. He arrived at PNC Park at 2 p.m., five hours before the first pitch.
Triolo said many thoughts were running through his head while he was driving.
“There was definitely a period when no music was being played, and thoughts were going wild,” he said. “All of it was exciting.”
Meanwhile, relief pitcher Colin Holderman (right wrist inflammation) said he plans to come off the injured list Friday.
First baseman Ji-Man Choi, who is rehabbing from an Achilles injury, was transferred from Double-A Altoona to Indianapolis. He has been on the Pirates’ injured list since April 15.
