Pirates players take part in Roberto Clemente Day of Service throughout Pittsburgh
Members of the Pittsburgh Pirates honored the legacy of Roberto Clemente on Monday by participating in several service activities throughout the city of Pittsburgh as part of the organization’s annual Day of Service.
Players, coaches, executives and front office staff paid tribute to Clemente’s humanitarian impact at six community events, including field renovation, a drive-through food distribution, visiting with families in need and assembling wellness kits and preparedness kits.
Star pitcher Paul Skenes joined teammates and members of the Clemente family on the North Shore to pack and distribute bags of produce and non-perishable foods in support of Operation Troop Appreciation.
In other events:
• Players and coaches joined a local RBI group for a field renovation project as part of the organization’s continued commitment to support local youth baseball and softball.
• Members joined a local women’s shelter to provide and pack items for “welcome home bags,” which are given to residents leaving the shelter for transitional housing.
• A fourth group visited a local center to help assemble snack packs and provide mental wellness kits for children and teens served by the center. The Pirates volunteers join with Sheetz staff members to restock the food pantry and diaper bank and help revamp playrooms with deep cleaning and toy setup.
• Players and coaches went to Pittsburgh’s Ronald McDonald House to visit with families and staff, led a craft activity, cleaned common areas and prepared lunch for guests.
• Pirates executives and front office staff members joined partner executives for a packing event at PNC Park in support of Operation Troop Appreciation. The event includes packing snack kits for active-duty troops and participating in a bracelet-making activity in support of Zip With Us, an organization supporting children diagnosed with cancer.
In addition to the Day of Service activities on Monday, the Pirates will honor their MLB Clemente Award nominee, as well as the winners of the organization’s Pirates Community Commitment Program before the team hosts the Cubs at 6:40 p.m. at PNC Park.
The PCCP is an organization-wide initiative inspired by Roberto Clemente’s legacy, in which Pirates players throughout the development system are asked to complete a minimum of 10 hours of community service annually.
