The Pittsburgh Pirates signed their second-round selection in the MLB Draft, Texas prep shortstop Wyatt Sanford.

Sanford, who was signed by scout John Lombardo, received a $2.5 million bonus, per Jim Callis of MLB Pipeline, which was over the slot value of $1,984,800 for the No. 47 pick.

The 6-foot-1, 175-pounder was a second-team All-American and his district’s defensive player of the year as a senior. Sanford was rated the draft’s No. 35 prospect by MLB Pipeline and No. 42 by Baseball America. His father, Chance, was drafted by the Pirates in 1991 and ’92 and played 14 games with them in the majors in 1998.

The Pirates have signed 16 of their 21 draft picks, with first-rounder Konnor Griffin, a shortstop/outfielder from Jackson Prep in Florence, Miss., as the only one of their top 11 picks yet to sign. The others are Jacob Bimbi, a left-handed pitcher from Western Kentucky taken in the 11th round; Brian Curley, a right-hander from VCU (16th round); Andrew Patrick, an outfielder from Wright State (17th); and Taylor Penn, a prep right-hander from Woodford County, Ky. (20th).
