Pirates claim infielder Ildemaro Vargas off waivers, designate Troy Stokes Jr.
The Pirates claimed infielder Ildemaro Vargas off waivers from the Chicago Cubs on Monday.
Vargas, 29, is 3 for 21 this season with two doubles and two RBIs. The switch-hitter, who has played second base and shortstop this season, was designated for assignment May 15.
To make room on the 40-man roster, the Pirates designated Troy Stokes Jr. for assignment. He went 2 for 18 with a double and two RBIs over eight games with the Pirates.
Vargas reached the major leagues in 2017 with Arizona and has played in 151 games with the Diamondbacks (2017-20), Twins (2020) and Cubs (2020-21). The utility infielder has 65 appearances at second base, 21 at third base, eight at second base, seven at shortstop, five at first base, one at third base and one each in left field and right field during his major league career.
