Pirates sign LHP Robbie Erlin, C Andrew Susac, OF Charlie Tilson to minor league deals
With spring training less than two weeks away, the Pittsburgh Pirates fortified their depth in some notable areas by announcing the signings of veterans to minor league contracts that include invites to spring training.
Robbie Erlin joined Derek Holland as veteran left-handed relievers signed. Erlin, 29, made 106 appearances (38 starts) between 2013-19 with the San Diego Padres, going 13-20 with a 4.57 ERA and 1.27 WHIP.
Last season, Erlin had a 5.37 ERA. He and Holland were needed because the Pirates have only two left-handed pitchers on their 40-man roster. In his career, Erlin has a 3.86 ERA and 1.17 WHIP out of the bullpen.
Also announced as signings Friday were catcher Andrew Susac and outfielder Charlie Tilson.
Pirates general manager Ben Cherington said last week he would add catching depth before the season, and Susac has 113 games of experience (.221 career average) for three MLB teams between 2014-18.
Tilson has experience at all three outfield spots, having played in 96 games for the Chicago White Sox between 2016-19. He has a .246 career average.
