The Pittsburgh Pirates added a veteran catcher known for his defense to their spring training roster by signing Tony Wolters to a minor-league contract Thursday.

Wolters will earn $1.4 million if he makes the Pirates’ 26-man roster, a source told the Tribune-Review.

Wolters, 28, spent the 2020 season with the Colorado Rockies, where the left-handed hitter batted .230 with four doubles and eight RBIs in 42 games. He ranked fifth among NL catchers with 35 starts and ninth in innings caught (283 2/3).

A 2010 third-round draft pick by Cleveland, Wolters was claimed off waivers by the Rockies in February 2016. He had his best season in 2019, with a .262 batting average, 17 doubles, 42 RBIs and 42 runs scored. He ranked third in the NL in runners caught stealing (20) that season, and also had a streak of 106 games without an error that ran from Aug. 16, 2018 until Aug. 19, 2019.
