Pirates sign veteran pitcher Trevor Cahill to 1-year contract

Trevor Cahill was 1-2 with a 3.24 ERA last season for the San Francisco Giants.

The Pittsburgh Pirates added a veteran to their pitching staff by signing right-hander Trevor Cahill to a one-year contract for $1.5 million, with another $1 million in incentives.

The Pirates are his ninth team in 13 seasons. The 6-foot-4, 223-pounder was 1-2 with a 3.24 ERA and 31 strikeouts in 25 innings over 11 appearances, including six starts, last season for the San Francisco Giants.

Cahill, 33, was drafted by the Oakland A’s in the second round in 2006 and was an All-Star in 2010, when he was 18-8 with a 2.97 ERA over 196 2/3 innings and 30 starts. He also has played for the Arizona Diamondbacks, Atlanta Braves, Chicago Cubs, San Diego Padres, Kansas City Royals and Los Angeles Angels. He has pitched out of the starting rotation (225 games) and bullpen (127) in his career.
