Early evening in Pittsburgh featured clear, sunny skies and temperatures in the mid-60s. About 4½ hours to the northwest, though, cold and snowflakes led to a postponement of the Pittsburgh Pirates’ game.

The Pirates’ scheduled game at the Detroit Tigers was called just before 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, the Tigers announced. It will be made up Wednesday as part of a split doubleheader — 2:10 p.m. as well as the previously scheduled 6:40 p.m. first pitch.

The postponement is the first of the year for the Pirates, though they did have a short rain delay during their first home series of the year. Opening Day in Detroit on April featured at times near-whiteout conditions, but the game continued.

The Pirates announced veteran lefty Tyler Anderson will start Wednesday’s first game. He was the probable starter for Tuesday’s scheduled game against Detroit right-hander Michael Fulmer.

Wednesday’s scheduled starters were to be Pirates righty Mitch Keller against Detroit right-hander Spencer Turnbull. The Pirates are listing the nightcap starting pitcher as “TBA.” The Tigers announced they will keep their starters on schedule in their previously announced order.

As per MLB’s rules during the coronavirus pandemic, doubleheader games will be seven innings each.

The Pirates (7-9) have won four of six and six of nine after a 1-6 start. Detroit (6-10) has lost four in a row.
