New Pittsburgh Pirates general manager Ben Cherington has found his right-hand man.

The Pirates announced Tuesday morning they hired Toronto Blue Jays amateur scouting director Steve Sanders as assistant GM.

“Steve has significant experience in amateur and international scouting from his time with the Red Sox and Blue Jays,” Cherington said in a statement. “He has a deep commitment to continuous improvement in process and decision making and, as importantly, to his own professional growth and that of the people he works with. Kevan Graves, Steve and I have various experiences and perspectives on the game and decision making, and we share a commitment to getting better every day, to helping people, and to the Pirates. Kevan, Steve and I will collaborate across all aspects of baseball operations.”

Sanders spent the last three seasons in that role with the Blue Jays. That coincided with Cherington’s tenure as the Blue Jays’ vice president of baseball operations.

Sanders worked in professional baseball for 11 seasons, beginning in his hometown of Los Angeles working as an intern in the Dodgers’ organization.

He interned with the Red Sox in 2011 then became an assistant in the amateur and international scouting departments the following year, Cherington’s first as Boston’s GM.

Sanders was promoted to international scouting coordinator in 2014 and to assistant amateur scouting director the following year. He then followed Cherington to the Blue Jays in 2017.

Sanders pitched collegiately at Northwestern. He majored in economics and minored in business.

Two players drafted in the first round by Sanders for the Blue Jays are ranked among the top 100 prospects by MLBPipeline.com — right-hander Nate Pearson at No. 12 and infielder Jordan Groshans at No. 70.

Pearson finished this year pitching at Triple-A Buffalo while Groshens played at low-Class A Lansing.
