Marlins second baseman Luis Arraez is unable to catch the throw as the Pirates’ Henry Davis steals second during the eighth inning June 23.

The Pittsburgh Pirates will begin their season on the road for the eighth straight year in 2024 when they visit the Miami Marlins for a Thursday, March 28, opener.

The team announced its full 2024 schedule Thursday. After four games in Miami and three in Washington, the Pirates will face the Baltimore Orioles in their home opener Friday, April 5, at PNC Park.

The teams have long been tied together by facing off in the 1971 and 1979 World Series, but this is the first time the Pirates’ home opener will be against the Orioles.

A major storyline early in the 2024 season likely will be the MLB debut of No. 1 draft pick Paul Skenes. If the Pirates want that momentous occasion to occur at home, they’ll have plenty of options in April. After a three-game series with the Orioles, the Pirates will host Detroit for a pair of games April 8-9. There will be a seven-game homestand against Boston and Milwaukee from April 19-25.

A highlight of the schedule is a July 4 home game against the St. Louis Cardinals. The longest homestand is 10 games against Washington, Miami and Kansas City from Sept. 5-15.

The Pirates will play their final home series against Milwaukee from Sept. 24-26, then close the schedule with three games against the New York Yankees in the Bronx from Sept. 27-29.

The Pirates haven’t opened a season at home since defeating St. Louis, 4-1, on April 3, 2016. Francisco Liriano pitched six scoreless innings, and David Freese, Francisco Cervelli and Gregory Polanco each had a pair of hits.
