Pirates trade Johan Oveido to Red Sox for top outfield prospect

The Pittsburgh Pirates have traded a pitcher for a bat, sending right-handed starter Johan Oviedo to the Boston Red Sox for outfield prospect Jhostynxon Garcia in a five-player deal.

The Pirates are giving up Ovideo, left-handed pitcher Tyler Samaniego and catcher Adonys Guzman and are receiving Garcia and right-handed pitcher Jesus Travieso, the team announced Thursday.

Garcia, 22, is one of the top 100 prospects in baseball, according to Baseball America (No. 76) and MLB.com (No. 85). A right-handed batter, Garcia slashed .271/.334/.498 with 18 home runs for Triple-A Worcester last season. He played in five games with the Red Sox, going 1 for 7 with a double.

Scouting reports tout his power, especially to the opposite field. He has primarily played center field as a pro. He is nicknamed “Password,” due to his difficult-to-spell first name.

Travieso, 18, went 2-0 with a 3.51 ERA and 38 strikeouts in 25 2/3 innings with Class A Salem last season. According to scouting reports, he has elite stuff but struggles with command.

Ovideo, 22, went 2-1 with a 3.57 ERA and 42 strikeouts in 40 1/3 innings last season with the Pirates as he made his return from Tommy John surgery.

Samaniego, 26, went 1-1 with a 3.42 ERA and 30 strikeouts in 26 1/3 innings of relief with Double-A Altoona last year.

Guzman, who turned 22 Thursday, was the Pirates’ fifth-round pick out of the University of Arizona in the 2025 draft.
