With assistant general manager Kevan Graves temporarily monitoring the roster, the Pittsburgh Pirates opened up a spot Thursday when they traded right-handed relief pitcher Parker Markel to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim for cash considerations.

Markel, 29, spent most of last season in the Seattle Mariners’ minor-league system, appearing in 22 games and saving eight for Triple-A Tacoma. He was 2-0 with a 2.60 ERA. He also was 2-0 through five scoreless innings for Double-A Arkansas.

The Pirates claimed Markel off waivers July 27, and he threw six hitless, scoreless innings for Triple-A Indianapolis before he was recalled to the majors.

With the Pirates, he was 0-1 with a 5.71 ERA and 21 strikeouts in 15 appearances and 17 1/3 innings.
