Pirates trade RHP Clay Holmes to Yankees for two minor league infielders
A day after sending All-Star second baseman Adam Frazier to the San Diego Padres for three prospects, the Pittsburgh Pirates traded right-handed reliever Clay Holmes to the New York Yankees for infielders Hoy Jun Park and Diego Castillo.
Holmes, 28, was 3-2 with a 4.93 ERA, 44 strikeouts and 25 walks in 44 appearances this season. A ninth-round draft pick in 2011, Holmes battled arm injuries early in his career and was designated for assignment after missing most of last season. He received a nonroster invite to spring training, where he made the Opening Day roster and became an effective reliever out of the bullpen.
The 25-year-old Park was ranked No. 13 in the 2014 international class out of Seoul, South Korea. The 6-foot-1, 175-pounder, who bats lefty, started the season in Double-A Somerset (N.J) but was promoted to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, where he leads the East League in batting (.327), on-base percentage (.475), OPS (1.042) and walks (46) and ranks in the top five in runs scored (44) and slugging (.567). He has a combined 10 doubles, one triple, 11 home runs and 32 RBIs in 58 games this season. Park can play second base, shortstop or in the outfield.
Castillo, 23, is hitting .277 with 18 doubles, 11 homers, 32 RBIs and an .850 OPS in 58 games at Somerset. The 6-foot, 170-pound Venezuelan can play second base or shortstop.
