Pittsburgh head coach Jeff Capel III watches during the second half of an NCAA college basketball game against Miami, Sunday, Jan. 12, 2020, in Coral Gables, Fla. Miami won 66-58.

Pitt’s ticket office is accepting deposits for the 2020-21 men’s basketball season, with the hope that fans will be allowed in the Petersen Events Center for games.

Currently, no fans are permitted at any Pitt athletic event through September, but university officials said a $100 risk-free deposit will ensure priority to purchase tickets if restrictions are lifted. Pitt also said it continues to work with state and county officials on protocols and scenarios that will enable fans to attend games.

Pitt has not released its schedule, but the NCAA Division I Council on Wednesday announced that Nov. 25 — the day before Thanksgiving — is the official start of the season. Schools will be permitted no more than 27 games if they are playing in a multi-team event. The recommended minimum is a four-game, nonconference schedule.

The NCAA Tournament is expected to remain at 68 teams, with teams needing a minimum of 13 games to be eligible.

The first official practice is Oct. 14, 42 days before the first game. No scrimmages or exhibition games are permitted.

Although no dates have been set, Pitt is scheduled to play home games against ACC opponents Duke, Florida State, Louisville, North Carolina, Syracuse, Clemson, N.C. State, Notre Dame, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest.

Pitt will return three of its top scorers from last season in Justin Champagnie (12.7 ppg., 7.0 rpg.), Xavier Johnson (11.7 ppg., 4.9 apg.) and Au’Diese Toney (9.5 ppg., 4.8 rpg.).

The Panthers finished 16-17 overall and 6-14 in the ACC last season, good for 13th place in the 15-team field.
