Pitt athletic director Heather Lyke said she has made “lots of progress” toward a contract extension for football coach Pat Narduzzi, who is signed through the 2024 season.

“We, hopefully, will have an announcement shortly. We’re close,” she said.

Narduzzi was hired in December 2014, as a first-time head coach after eight seasons as defensive coordinator at Michigan State. He received his first extension in 2017.

While approaching his eighth season as Pitt’s coach, he is tied with Walt Harris as Pitt’s two longest-tenured football coaches in the past 57 years.

Narduzzi (53-37 in seven seasons) led Pitt to an ACC Coastal title in 2018 before bringing home the conference championship in December. He will open spring drills for the 2022 season Feb. 28.

Narduzzi’s annual salary for 2021 was reported by USA Today as $4.819 million.
