Pitt coach Pat Narduzzi knew he had a personnel issue when he looked at his depth chart at defensive end and saw only three players above freshman or redshirt freshman status.

So, he hooked into the transfer portal and secured a verbal commitment Sunday from former Nebraska defensive end Chief Borders.

Borders, a junior from Franklin, Ga., will be at his third school in three seasons after playing 2021 and 2022 at Florida and last season at Nebraska.

Pitt lost three defensive ends since the end of last season — Dayon Hayes and Sam Okunlola (transfers to Colorado) and Nate Temple (season-ending injury).

Borders (6-foot-4, 245 pounds) played 16 games at Florida, recording three tackles before transferring to Nebraska last year. He played in 12 games for the Cornhuskers, with nine tackles.

With two seasons of eligibility remaining, Borders joins Pitt’s senior defensive ends, Bam Brima and Kansas State transfer Nate Matlack, and sophomore Jimmy Scott.

Pitt has added 14 transfers to its roster for the 2024 season.
