Pitt announced Tuesday that it will assume the responsibilities of Alliance 412, “unifying support for Panther student-athletes into one streamlined and powerful platform.”

When Alliance 412 was founded in 2021 by Pitt mega-donor Chris Bickell, the collective proved critical in helping the Panthers navigate a new world of college athletics as it pertained to name, image and likeness (NIL).

But four years later, that landscape has altered significantly, with new NIL rules and guidelines put into place following the seismic House vs. NCAA settlement in June that greenlit universities to begin directly paying their student-athletes, totaling $20.5 million per academic year.

In light of that court ruling, it remained to be seen how, or if, collectives such as Alliance 412 would co-exist with the universities themselves in providing NIL opportunities.

“Alliance 412 has been instrumental in helping Pitt navigate the early years of NIL, and we are incredibly grateful for the vision of Chris Bickell and the countless supporters who stood behind it,” athletic director Allen Greene said in a statement.

“Now, as the industry evolves, Pitt must be aggressive and intentional in resourcing our student-athletes and coaches. Now that there are clearer guidelines from the College Sports Commission, bringing NIL strategy under our roof positions us to attack this new era head-on and deliver championship results.”

Per Pitt’s news release, the consolidation of Alliance 412 under the athletic department’s oversight will “allow Panther student-athletes to leverage a comprehensive ecosystem of tools to drive valid business purpose NIL deals.”

Alliance 412’s operations will cease Sept. 30.

Current Alliance 412 members will receive more information on how to transition their memberships.

Pitt is encouraging members to transition their support to tax-deductible contributions through Pitt Athletics.

“Allen and I share a vision for where Pitt must go to compete at the highest levels,” Bickell said in a statement. “This is about ensuring our student-athletes and coaches have every advantage. I’m fully invested in Pitt’s plan and am excited to see Panther Nation rally behind it.”

Current associate athletic director Pat Bostick has been appointed in a similar capacity to oversee NIL business development and strategic partnerships for Pitt’s student-athletes.

“Fired up to help lead these efforts moving forward for Pitt athletics. More to come, but make no mistake, our student-athletes, coaches and teams will have an edge on the competition. Let’s do this together!” Bostick posted on X.
