Pitt quarterback Ty Dieffenbach (14) warms up before an NCAA college football game against West Virginia Saturday, Sept. 14, 2024, in Pittsburgh.

Pitt lost a second scholarship quarterback to the NCAA transfer portal when Ty Dieffenbach announced plans to leave the program. He joins Nate Yarnell, who also entered the portal after the season.

Dieffenbach (6-foot-6, 220 pounds) arrived in January 2023, from Calabasas, Calif., where he threw for 4,153 yards and 48 touchdowns over three seasons at Agoura High School.

During his two seasons at Pitt, Dieffenbach never played in a game. Near the end of this season, he was leap-frogged on the depth chart by walk-on David Lynch, who played briefly after injuries to Eli Holstein and Yarnell.

Among Pitt’s scholarship players from the 2024 season, there are currently 12 in the portal.

Pitt has four quarterbacks on its roster, including Holstein and freshman Julian Dugger (Penn Hills), and walk-ons Lynch and Jake Frantl.
