Pitt basketball adds Stony Brook graduate transfer forward Mouhamadou Gueye
Jeff Capel continued rebuilding his roster Monday, adding a fifth new player when he received a verbal commitment from 6-foot-9 Stony Brook graduate transfer Mouhamadou Gueye.
The addition of Gueye gives the Panthers some help in the paint for 6-9 John Hugley, who was recently reinstated from a suspension after missing most of the 2020-21 season.
Gueye, who has one year of eligibility remaining, averaged 9.7 points, 7.1 rebounds and 3.1 blocks last season for Stony Brook, which finished 9-14 (7-9 in the America East Conference). He was named American East Defensive Player of the Year in 2020-21 while finishing his two-year Stony Brook career with a school record 2.4 blocks per game (129 total).
He also played at Monroe (N.Y.) College where he was ranked a top 100 JUCO player.
Capel has found the NCAA transfer portal to be a useful tool this offseason, also adding to his roster Jamarius Burton (Texas Tech), Daniel Oladapo (Oakland, Mich.), Chris Payton (Indian Hills Community College, Iowa), Gueye and high school recruit Nate Santos.
Returning to the team are forwards Hugley, Noah Collier and Max Amadasun; guards Nike Sibande, Femi Odukale and Ithiel Horton; and guard-forward William Jeffress.
