The Preseason NIT, which wasn’t played last season because of scheduling conflicts, is typically played Thanksgiving weekend. Pitt’s opponents haven’t been finalized, but college basketball insider Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports reported that Baylor, Florida and Oregon State will be included in the field with Pitt.
Baylor (23-11 last season) earned a berth in the NCAA Tournament while Florida finished 16-17 and went to the postseason NIT and Oregon State was 11-21.
Before the start of preseason practice, Pitt will travel in August to the Canary Islands and Barcelona, Spain, where they will play two exhibition games. Rising sophomoes Guillermo and Jorge Diaz Graham are natives of the Canary Islands.
Pitt also will visit Morgantown, W.Va., on Dec. 6 to continue the Backyard Brawl with West Virginia. It will be the 190th meeting between the two longtime rivals.
So far, coach Jeff Capel has secured commitments from transfers Zack Austin of High Point (N.C.) and Ishmael Leggett, formerly of Rhode Island, while rebuilding his roster.
