Defensive back Therran Coleman, who made his only indelible mark on the Pitt football program when he intercepted a pass to nail down an overtime victory against Syracuse in 2018, decided to enter the NCAA transfer portal.

Coleman, a Brashear graduate, played sparingly throughout his four seasons at Pitt, splitting time between cornerback and safety. He appeared in 34 games, with one start in 2017, and recorded a total of 18 tackles, a forced fumble and an interception.

Other defensive backs moved ahead of Colemen on the depth chart over the past two seasons as coach Pat Narduzzi mainly turned to redshirt freshmen Erick Hallett and Marquis Williams and senior Jazzee Stocker for reserve help. Also, safety John Petrishen transferred to Pitt from Penn State this year and is expected to compete for playing time next season.

Entering the transfer portal is no guarantee a player will transfer. He can test his marketability and, in theory, return to his original team.

But Narduzzi said in the past that he would not be eager to welcome back players who put their names in the portal.

“If a kid’s name goes in the transfer portal, you can pretty much kiss him goodbye,” Narduzzi said last January. “I’m not going to have one guy with one foot in and one foot out.”
