Pitt football coach Pat Narduzzi had a special sendoff for longtime TribLive beat reporter Jerry DiPaola on Thursday as the Panthers wrapped up spring practice.

Narduzzi gifted DiPaola a Panthers game jersey with his name embroidered on the back to recognize DiPaola’s nearly 15 years on the beat.

DiPaola will retire this week after a sportswriting career spanning more than 50 years, including the past 32 at the Trib.

“He’s loyal to Pitt football and to this university,” Narduzzi said to the team. “We appreciate everything he has done for this university and you guys.”

DiPaola, 70, will cap his career Saturday with coverage of Pitt’s Blue-Gold Game at Acrisure Stadium.

“It’s been a pleasure,” DiPaola told the Pitt players. “You’ve been giving of your time to all of us, which you didn’t have to do. One thing about Pitt football players is they’re loyal, and they’re smart. They know the right things to say, and they work hard.”
