Pitt’s Au’Diese Toney shoots over Canisius’ Jacco Fritz on Monday, Dec. 30, 2019 at Petersen Events Center.

Sophomore forward Au’Diese Toney, who has missed only nine starts in 45 career games, injured his elbow in practice this week and will not play Saturday when Pitt resumes ACC play against Wake Forest at Petersen Events Center.

Toney’s absence will be a blow to coach Jeff Capel, who has said defense and rebounding will be big keys to Pitt’s success this season. Toney is second on the team to freshman Justin Champagnie in rebounds per game (4.7) and fifth in points per game (6.4) and total steals (11).

Over the past four games, Toney has picked up his level of play and is averaging 8.5 points and 5.8 rebounds per game.

Pitt’s starting lineup against Wake Forest, includes senior forward Eric Hamilton, who averages 4.5 rebounds per game and leads the team in field-goal percentage (57.1). Capel said Thursday he expects improved play from Hamilton, who hasn’t recorded more than three rebounds in a game since Dec. 3 against Rutgers.

The remainder of the starting lineup includes Champagnie, Xavier Johnson, Trey McGowens and Ryan Murphy.
