Pitt hires former player Gilbert Brown as director of player, alumni development
Jeff Capel has replaced one Pitt man with another.
Former Pitt player Gilbert Brown, who scored 1,048 points, was part of five NCAA Tournament teams and made an Elite Eight appearance with the Panthers in 2009, was named Director of Player and Alumni Development. Brown was associate head coach at South Kent (Conn.) Prep last season. He replaces former Pitt player Ronald Ramon, who joined the Fordham staff as an assistant coach.
“Gil is an outstanding Pitt man with a great deal of passion for the game of basketball and the University of Pittsburgh,” Capel said in a statement. “We connected immediately over basketball when I first started here at Pitt and he was rehabbing an injury and extending his playing career. I look forward to watching Gil continue to build great relationships with past, present and future Pitt basketball players and their families.”
As a senior, Brown averaged 11.3 points, 4.4 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game while starting all 34 games. Pitt was 111-30 and won two Big East championships with Brown on the roster.
Brown played professionally for 10 years, including stops in Germany, the NBA D-League, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Turkey, Italy and Israel. He was a NBA D-League All-Defensive Team (third-team) selection in 2014 and earned Israeli League All-Star honors in 2016.
