Jeff Capel and the Pitt men’s basketball team officially added another transfer Tuesday when the Panthers announced the signing of 2021 American East defensive player of the year, Mouhamadou Gueye.

The 6-foot-9 forward from Stony Brook averaged 9.7 points and 7.1 rebounds, while recording a single-season school-record 3.1 blocks per game this past year. He also earned third team all-conference honors and was an all-defensive team honoree.

“Mo (Mouhamadou) is a terrific athlete with a defensive mindset and a strong all-around skill set,” Capel said. “We love his competitiveness and ability to play above the rim on both ends of the floor. He gives us another versatile, experienced forward who can help impact winning.”

The Staten Island, N.Y. native, who will become the eighth player on the Pitt roster that stands at 6-foot-7 or taller, scored a total of 436 points and grabbed 360 rebounds during his two years at Stony Brook. He also averaged 2.4 blocks per game in 54 career contests. He scored in double figures 10 times this past season as a senior and grabbed 10 or more rebounds six times.

Before playing at Stony Brook, Gueye played at Monroe College (N.Y.) where he helped the JUCO school win a pair of regional titles and a berth into the 2017 NJCAA National tournament. He averaged 16 points and eight rebounds per game in 2019. He was also a ranked top 100 JUCO player.

Gueye is the fifth addition to the Panthers roster for next season. Texas Tech Jamarius Burton, Oakland’s Dan Oladapo, as well as junior college addition Christ Payton (Indian Hills) and prep school standout Nate Santos have joined the Panthers as well.
