Pitt’s women’s soccer team earned an at-large bid Monday and will make its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament, hosting Buffalo on Saturday.
The Panthers went 12-4-3 in the regular season, setting program records for wins (12) and goals (44) and making the ACC tournament. They are seeded fourth in their region and will meet MAC champion Buffalo (15-1-4) in the first round at 7 p.m. Saturday.
Penn State and West Virginia, perennial tournament participants, are also in the field.
The Nittany Lions (13-4-3), who earned an automatic bid by defeating Michigan State in the Big Ten tournament final, will host MAAC champ Quinnipiac (15-2-1) in the first round at 6 p.m. Friday. Penn State is 21-3 all-time in first-round matches and won the national title in 2015.
The Mountaineers (7-4-7) earned an automatic bid by beating TCU in the Big 12 tournament finals. WVU will host Virginia Tech at 1 p.m. Sunday. The Mountaineers have won 10 Big 12 tournament titles since joining the conference in 2012.
Should Penn State and West Virginia win, they would meet in the second round.
