Pitt’s baseball team will continue its journey through the ACC on Friday when it travels to Duke after a historic three-game sweep of No. 9 Florida State.

The Panthers (6-1, 3-0) rallied for a 9-7 victory in 13 innings Sunday at Dick Howser Stadium in Tallahassee, Fla. Kyle Hess drove in the decisive runs with a two-out double after Sky Duff doubled and Nico Popa was hit by a pitch.

Jordan McCrum earned his second save of the series. Florida State (2-4, 0-3) put five runners on the bases in extra innings, but Pitt’s bullpen safely escaped each jam.

Pitt recorded its first series sweep of a top-10 opponent since joining the ACC in 2014 and the second against a ranked ACC team. It was also Pitt’s first road sweep in the ACC and just the fourth overall.

Florida State hadn’t been swept at home since May 14-16, 2015, against Clemson.

Pitt rallied from a 7-3 deficit with two runs each in the seventh and ninth innings. In the seventh, David Yanni hit a two-run double. Two innings later, pinch hitter Dom Popa followed his brother’s lead and was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Nico homered to tie the score, his third this season and second of the series.

Pitt has defeated Florida State five times, with four coming under coach Mike Bell, a former Seminoles assistant.

Pitt pitcher Mitch Myers was named ACC Pitcher of the Week after striking out 13 Florida State batters in six shutout innings Friday.
