Pitt coach Pat Narduzzi likes to add a quarterback to his roster every year, and he received a verbal commitment for the class of 2023 on Saturday when Kenny Minchey announced his plans to enroll next year.

Minchey (6-foot-3, 200 pounds) is a three-star prospect, according to Rivals.com. He threw for 3,280 yards and 32 touchdowns last season for Pope John Paul II High School in Hendersonville, Tenn. While approaching his senior season, he has 17 scholarship offers, including from Power 5 schools Michigan State, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Virginia, Virginia Tech and West Virginia.

Minchey’s commitment surfaced after Pitt lost quarterback Joey Yellen and Davis Beville to the NCAA transfer portal and Kenny Pickett to the NFL this offseason. The Panthers have only three scholarship quarterbacks on their roster, including Kedon Slovis and Nick Patti at the top of the depth chart and Nate Yarnell, a redshirt freshman from the class of 2021.

Pitt didn’t recruit a high school quarterback for its class of 2022 after it signed Slovis in December for his final two seasons of eligibility.

Minchey is the second prospect to give Pitt a verbal commitment, joining wide receiver Zion Fowler of Jersey City, N.J.
