Pitt volleyball rolls over Colgate, advances into NCAA Tournament 2nd round
Pitt women’s volleyball advanced into the second round of the NCAA Tournament with a 3-0 sweep of Colgate (25-16, 25-14, 25-14) on Friday night in front of crowd of 2,667 at Petersen Events Center.
The No. 2-seeded Panthers (27-6) will meet No. 7 BYU (24-6) at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Pete. The winner will advance to the Sweet 16. Pitt has appeared in the past two Sweet 16s.
“(Colgate) played us tough at the start of each set,” Pitt coach Dan Fisher said. “But our defensive pressure mounted over time. I also thought that we had a pretty good night offensively so we’re feeling confident heading into (Saturday).”
The Panthers, 7-0 in first-round matches under Fisher, set a program record for the highest team hitting percentage (.381) in the modern era of the NCAA Tournament.
Valeria Vazquez Gomez recorded career highs for kills and hitting percentage in the tournament, achieving a team-high 13 on .458 hitting. She has delivered 46 kills on .396 hitting in her past three matches.
