Pitt head coach Jeff Capel has words for the official against Louisville in the second half on Saturday, Jan. 15, 2022 at Petersen Events Center.

Pitt will open its 2022-23 ACC basketball schedule before the start of the new year, meeting three conference foes in December, including NCAA Tournament finalist North Carolina at Petersen Events Center.

The Panthers’ first conference game will be Dec. 2 at N.C. State, followed by three nonconference games (at Vanderbilt and home against Sacred Heart and North Florida) and a visit to Syracuse on Dec. 20. The ACC announced Pitt’s game against the Tar Heels will be either Dec. 30 or 31. The Syracuse game will be Pitt’s last away from the Pete until the Panthers play Duke on Jan. 11.

Pitt’s other home games vs. ACC schools include Virginia (Jan. 3), Clemson (Jan. 7), Florida State (Jan. 21), Wake Forest (Jan. 25), Miami (Jan. 28), Louisville (Feb. 7), Boston College (Feb. 14), Georgia Tech (Feb. 21) and Syracuse (Feb. 25).

The remainder of the road schedule includes Georgia Tech (Jan. 14), Louisville (Jan. 18), North Carolina (Feb. 1), Florida State (Feb. 11), Virginia Tech (Feb. 18), Notre Dame (March 1), and Miami (March 4). After the Louisville game, the Panthers won’t hit the road again until visiting North Carolina on Feb. 1.

Game times and TV designations will be announced at a later date.

Pitt will confront its usual demanding schedule with the most experienced team in coach Jeff Capel’s five seasons. Players on the Panthers’ roster have a combined 631 career games, 159 more than last season’s roster and 300 more than in Capel’s first season at Pitt.

There are four backcourt players with 100 or more games at the Division I level. Fifth-year senior Jamarius Burton leads with 120, followed by Marquette transfer Greg Elliott (114), Nike Sibande (111) and Colgate transfer Nelly Cummings (109). Sibande (1,570), Cummings (1,112) and Burton (1,003) each have more than 1,000 career points. Elliott has made 94 3-point field goals.

The Panthers also return leading scorer and rebounder John Hugley IV, who recorded an average of 14.8 points and 7.9 rebounds.
