Pitt commit Judah Mintz is ranked as the 20th-best shooting guard in the Class of 2022 by Rivals.com.

With his 2021-22 roster largely — if not totally — finalized, Pitt coach Jeff Capel received his first verbal commitment from the Class of 2022 on Friday when rising high school senior Judah Mintz announced his plans to enroll next year.

A 6-foot-4 shooting guard, Mintz will play this season at Oak Hill (Va.) Academy after transferring from Gonzaga College High School in Washington, D.C. He averaged 16 points last season at Gonzaga.

Mintz is one of the top shooting guards in the nation, according to Rivals.com, which ranks him 20th. Rivals also ranks Mintz 103rd among overall prospects.

Patrick O’Brien, a recruiting analyst for phenomhoopreport.com, described Mintz as a guard who has the ability to make plays around the hoop.

“Mintz is a combo guard that gets to the basket,” O’Brien wrote, “finishes at the rim, and simply loves the mid-range game. He is also one that is able to step out and knock down the 3, as well as make an impact on the defensive end.”

Pitt will have an opening at shooting guard after the upcoming season when senior Nike Sibande exhausts his eligibility. The plan is for Mintz to fill that void, starting in 2022-23.

Mintz ultimately chose from among his three finalists — Pitt, Penn State and Georgetown — but he holds several offers from power conference schools, including LSU, Maryland, Florida, South Carolina, Texas Tech, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest.
