Pittsburgh Steelers assistant general manager Andy Weidl could be a candidate for the open New York Jets general manager job. Weidl joined the Steelers when Omar Khan was hired as the general manager of the team after the 2022 NFL Draft.

Weidl, a Mt. Lebanon native, joined the Steelers after spending seven years with the Philadelphia Eagles under the guidance of Eagles general manager Howie Roseman. Roseman gave Weidl the base for his philosophy: focus on the trenches and build from there. Since his arrival, the Steelers have done just that, drafting two tackles in the first round of back-to-back drafts and adding Zach Frazier, Spencer Anderson, and Mason McCormick to their room, too.

Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, a respected insider, floated Weidl’s name as a potential candidate to take over the Jets’ job after they fired Joe Douglas on Tuesday. Weidl has an extensive resume beyond just Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, helping build the 2012 Ravens Super Bowl-winning team under Ozzie Newsome.

Weidl has been instrumental in building the Steelers’ draft boards each season. Khan comes from a cap background, while Weidl comes from a scouting background. The aim was to mesh their two styles and highlight what they do well. It seems that has worked, but losing Weidl would be a blow to the Steelers.
