Golf can be a very frustrating game. Just ask Pittsburgh native Rick Stimmel.

After winning his semifinal match against Max Siegfried, 5 and 3, Stimmel lost to Norristown High School senior Joshua Ryan, 1-up, in the finals of the 17th annual R. Jay Sigel Amateur Match Play event sponsored by the Pennsylvania Golf Association on Wednesday.

Stimmel, who was Monday’s medalist with an 8-under par 64, raced out to a 3-up lead over Ryan through four holes in the finals, but the Liberty University commit charged back by winning Nos. 7, 8 and 9 to tie the match.

He continued his hot play at the Country Club of York, winning holes Nos. 10 and 12 to go 2-up. Stimmel responded by winning Nos. 13 and 15 to tie the match.

Ryan won No. 16 and held on for a 1-up victory.

Ryan defeated Nemacolin Country Club’s Brett Young, 3 and 1, in the semifinals.
