Plum, Franklin Regional grads score as Riveters clinch division title with win over Steel City FC
A clutch goal by Plum graduate Gina Proviano gave the Pittsburgh Riveters a division title Friday night.
Proviano scored in stoppage time to give the Riveters a 2-1 victory over Steel City FC, clinching the USL W League’s Great Forest Division championship.
Steel City (3-2-4) took the lead in the first half when Pitt’s Emily Graeca converted a penalty kick after Minah Syam was called for a trip inside the penalty area.
The Riveters (6-1-3) tied the score when Franklin Regional graduate Sydney Lindeman scored from long range in the 70th minute.
Proviano scored the winner, her third goal of the season, in the 95th minute at the end of a series of passes. Lilly Bane got the assist.
The Riveters will host the Central Conference Playoffs next week with the semifinals set for July 4 and the final scheduled for July 6. Matchups for the semifinals are TBA.
The other qualifying teams are the Minnesota Aurora, Cincinnati-based Kings Hammer and the Great Lakes Division winner, either Detroit City FC or AFC Ann Arbor.
