Rachel Virgili wins sectional, qualifies for U.S. Women's Open

Waynesburg native and LPGA player Rachel (Rohanna) Virgili won the U.S. Open Women’s Sectional on Monday at Chartiers Country Club and earned a spot in the field for the U.S. Women’s Open.

Virgili finished with a two-round total of 1-over par 141. She shot a 2-under par 68 during the second round.

Paris Hilinski and Alexandra White earned alternate spots. Hilinski shot a 5-over 145 and White a 6-over 146.

The field of 49 included a couple local golfers. They were Jess Meyers of Oakmont, Danae Rugola of Uniontown, Kate Miller of Hempfield, Olivia Zambruno of Bullskin, Marissa Balish of Wildwood and Caroline Wrigley of North Allegheny.

The U.S. Women’s Open is May 30 to June 2 at the Country Club of Charleston, S.C.
