Rain suspends Round 1 of Sunnehanna Amateur; Ryan Hybl holds early lead Jackson, Goetz among the leaders
JOHNSTOWN — Oklahoma men’s golf coach Ryan Hybl played most of his round rain-free during Day 1 of the 67th annual Sunnehanna Amateur on Tuesday.
But a heavy thunderstorm moved through the area and delayed play for more than three hours. When play resumed, Hybl saw his early four-shot lead shrink.
He finished the first round at 5-under par 65 at Sunnehanna Country Club to lead the prestigious tournament. LSU’s Trey Winstead had four birdies during his round and is a shot back at 4-under. He didn’t finish his round because of darkness. He had one hole to pay.
Murrysville’s Palmer Jackson is tied for third at 3-under. He, too, didn’t finish his round because of darkness. Jackson had four birdies, including three consecutive on the back nine (Nos. 11, 12 and 13). He bogeyed No. 17 and dropped a shot.
Greensburg’s Mark Goetz had a solid first round. He shot 2-under 68 and is tied for eighth. The West Virginia junior had three birdies (Nos. 1, 9 and 11) and one bogey (No. 3) during his round.
Peters Township’s Connor Schmidt and Fox Chapel’s Gregor Meyer were within four shots of the lead, tied for 20th, after shooting a 1-under par 69.
Schmidt shot a 3-over 38 on the front nine with three bogeys (Nos. 2, 5 and 8), but he quickly erased that starting on No. 10. He sandwiched birdies on Nos. 10 and 12 with an eagle on No. 11.
Meyer had three birdies (Nos. 1, 9 and 11) and a double bogey 6 on No. 8.
New Castle’s Evan Long shot 1-over 71, Brookville’s Nathan Smith fired a 3-over 73 and Oakmont’s Sean Knapp fired a 4-over 74.
There were 30 players under par during the first round.
The second round of the tournament will begin 8:30 a.m. Wednesday. Players needing to finish the first round will begin at 8 a.m.
