RB Jaylen Warren inactive for Steelers' game in Dublin with knee injury
Limited in practice all week, Pittsburgh Steelers running back Jaylen Warren is inactive with a knee injury and won’t play against the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday in Dublin’s Croke Park.
Veteran free agent signing Kenny Gainwell is expected to start for the Steelers (2-1) against the Vikings (2-1) in the team’s first overseas trip in 12 years.
Warren originally was listed on the injury report as a resting veteran before the knee injury was listed as a reason for his limited availability in practice. He was listed as questionable to play by coach Mike Tomlin on Friday.
Warren is the feature back for the first time in his three-year career. He spent his previous seasons backing up Najee Harris, who departed the Steelers in free agency.
He started the first three games and was the Steelers’ leading rusher with 132 yards on 43 carries. He also has 11 catches for 142 yards and a touchdown.
The start for Gainwell would be his fifth in 70 career games. He spent his first four seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles before joining the Steelers in March. He has 16 carries for 55 yards and a touchdown to go with seven receptions for 30 yards.
Third-round draft pick Kaleb Johnson also could see an uptick in playing time. He has just two carries through three games and did not play in the team’s win last weekend at New England.
On Saturday, the Steelers’ elevated running back Trey Sermon from the practice squad, and he will serve as the third running back against the Vikings.
Other players declared inactive Sunday are cornerback Joey Porter Jr., who will miss his third consecutive game with a hamstring injury; outside linebacker Alex Highsmith; guard Andrus Peat; and defensive end Esezi Otomewo. Highsmith was declared out Friday and did not make the trip with the Steelers.
Nick Herbig will start for the second consecutive game in Highsmith’s absence.
