Cincinnati Reds draft Quaker Valley grad Tyler Garbee
The Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday selected Quaker Valley graduate and Mercyhurst University senior right-hander Tyler Garbee in the 19th round of the Major League Baseball draft.
Through 17 appearances and 11 starts this season, Garbee owns a 3.08 earned-run average with 109 strikeouts in 73 innings of work.
Garbee struck out 12 batters and surrendered four hits over 7 2/3 innings of work in a 4-2 loss to Tampa on Sunday in the opening round of the NCAA Division II College World Series in Cary, N.C.
Now 9-3 on the season, Garbee reached the 100-strikeout milestone for the season against the Spartans.

The Lakers staved off elimination Tuesday with a win against Catawba to improve to 35-15 on the season. They play UC San Diego on Wednesday.
Garbee earned Atlantic-ABCA/Rawlings All-Region First Team honors this spring as he helped Mercyhurst reach the national tournament for the second straight season.
A former pitcher at Pitt, Garbee transferred to Mercyhurst for his junior and senior seasons. He is 15-4 with 182 strikeouts in 144 1/3 innings over two campaigns with the Lakers.
