In-person racing for the Dick’s Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon returns in 2022, and registration for the weekend of races and events officially opened Wednesday.

More than 40,000 runners of all ages and abilities are expected to participate.

The Pittsburgh Marathon will be the weekend of April 29 to May 1.

“More than 19,000 runners moved with us virtually over the past two years, so we look forward to getting runners back to a live start line while giving them the best experience possible as a way of saying ‘thank you’ for their continued support,” P3R CEO Troy Schooley said.

Delayed a year due to covid-19, the Run for a Reason Charity Program will have a second half marathon course exclusively for those who raise $1,500 for an official charity of their choice.

Five hundred runners will have the exclusive opportunity on brand new course with a start line in Shadyside. Those runners also will be able to enjoy a full red-carpet experience, a unique medal and a special race-day bib. Kids across southwestern Pennsylvania will log more than 200,000 training miles in preparation for the Chick-Fil-A Pittsburgh Kids Marathon as part of P3R’s Kids of STEEL program.

Now in more than 180 schools, Kids of STEEL is a free program that motivates kids and their families to live active, healthy lifestyles. The training plan invites any and all kids to log 25 total miles leading up to the one-mile race on Marathon Weekend to complete their 26 “marathon” miles.

Wednesday’s opening-day registration features exclusive giveaways and pricing. The first 250 runners registered for the Dick’s Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon and UPMC Health Plan Pittsburgh Half Marathon will receive registration at a discounted rate.

All runners can register for the 2022 weekend of events at the current early bird rate of $95.
