NFL fines Steelers, Mike Tomlin for violating injury report on Ben Roethlisberger
The Pittsburgh Steelers and coach Mike Tomlin have been levied fines totaling $100,000 for not listing quarterback Ben Roethlisberger on the Week 2 injury report.
A league source confirmed Friday the organization was fined $75,000 and Tomlin $25,000 for not accurately listing the status of Roethlisberger on the practice report prior to the team’s Sept. 15 game against the Seattle Seahawks.
Roethlisberger did not play after halftime of that game because of an injury to his throwing elbow that would ultimately require season-ending surgery. In the days after the Seahawks game, teammates had publicly mentioned Roethlisberger’s elbow had been bothering him during Week 1 at the New England Patriots.
Mason Rudolph, who took over as the starting quarterback, said in September he had heard of Roethlisberger’s elbow injury “right after the New England game, (Roethlisberger) expressing some pain.”
League rules mandate players who are dealing with injuries to be listed on the injury reports released after three practice days each week.
The Steelers, through a spokesman, declined comment.
