Jonnu Smith’s tenure with the Pittsburgh Steelers is ending after one season.
The Steelers plan to release the veteran tight end in a move that saves the team $7 million against the cap, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Wednesday night.
The 30-year-old Smith, acquired from the Miami Dolphins in a July trade, had 38 receptions for 222 yards last season. He scored three touchdowns including one rushing.
The 6-foot-3, 248-pounder earned Pro Bowl honors in 2024 when he caught a career-high 88 passes for the Dolphins, but Smith failed to find a meaningful role in the Steelers offense. He never had more than 28 receiving yards in any game last season and averaged 5.8 yards per catch.
His arrival in Pittsburgh reunited him with former offensive coordinator Arthur Smith, who’d previously coached him in Tennessee and Atlanta.
