Jeff Capel being retained as coach at Pitt was no guarantee that the Panthers wouldn’t experience an eventful offseason with regards to player movement.

While Capel will remain for at least the 2026-27 campaign, one of Pitt’s leading contributors for the past two seasons apparently will not, as guard Brandin Cummings will enter the transfer portal, according to multiple reports Tuesday.

The window for Division I players to enter the portal is April 7-21.

Cummings, who will be a junior in the fall, is a local product from Midland, having played his prep career at Lincoln Park.

This past season, when Pitt finished 13-20 (5-13 ACC), he was limited to 19 games because of a lingering ankle injury that required surgery in mid-February, shutting him down for the year.

Over 19 games (nine starts), Cummings averaged 12.5 points per night, shooting 42.4% from the field.

Year 1 at Pitt in 2024-25 saw Cummings make impactful contributions as a freshman, as he played in 31 games, starting only four, while averaging 6.2 points per night.

Cummings never quite settled into being a full-time starter with the Panthers.

In fact, his biggest individual efforts came off the bench.

On Dec. 7, he dropped 34 points against Hofstra, setting a Pitt program record for most points off the bench.

Cummings also had 29 points against Syracuse last season on Jan. 10 and one game later, scored 23 vs. Georgia Tech, both off the bench.

As a true freshman, on Dec. 11, 2024, Cummings scored 30 points off the bench vs. Eastern Kentucky.

Cummings is the first piece of roster movement news for Pitt this offseason.

Guard Damarco Minor, forward Cam Corhen and guard/forward Barry Dunning Jr. all exhausted their eligibility following the 2025-26 campaign.
