After leading a turnaround of considerable note at Slippery Rock, Kevin Reynolds will look to do something similar at Point Park.

He was announced Wednesday as the next head men’s basketball coach at NAIA Point Park, replacing Joe Lewandowski, who resigned in March after four seasons in charge of the Pioneers.

The seventh head coach since the program began in 1967, Reynolds was an assistant last year for the men’s team at Quincy, a Division II program in Illinois.

That came after he served as an assistant at NCAA Division I Texas A&M Corpus Christi for two years (2019-21).

When he coached Slippery Rock for a decade (2008-18), the Rock won 188 times and made three NCAA Division II Tournament trips.

He had six 20-win seasons at SRU. Before his arrival, the program collected single-digit wins in 13 of 14 seasons.

“It is going to be an exciting time to be a part of the Pioneers team,” Reynolds said in a news release. “We plan on working together to accomplish our goals for Point Park basketball.”

Reynolds jumped into the coaching ranks as an assistant at IUP under Kurt Kanaskie from 1991-95, and also coached at Edinboro in 1995-96, before settling in for a six-year stay on staff at Division I Drake in Des Moines, Iowa, reuniting with Kanaskie.

Other stops for Reynolds, a Bloomsburg grad, included Penn State (director of basketball operations), Denver (assistant and interim head coach), and Morehead State (assistant).

Point Park finished 10-16 last season, including a 5-12 mark in the River States Conference.

“Point Park University has an excellent academic reputation with a close-knit campus,” Reynolds said. “It provides an excellent combination of quality academics and winning athletics.”
