Riverhounds earn draw in lightning-delayed match in Miami
In a game delayed by nearly three hours because of lightning, the Pittsburgh Riverhounds twice answered goals by Miami FC and came away with a 2-2 draw on the road Saturday night.
The Riverhounds (7-3-2) had a chance to take an early lead in the 16th minute when Russell Cicerone was taken down in the penalty area, but Alex Dixon’s penalty shot was handled by Miami goalkeeper Connor Sparrow.
Miami FC (5-4-4) took a 1-0 lead about eight minutes later when Junior Palacios headed in an Aedan Stanley corner kick.
The Riverhounds equalized for the first time in the 37th minute.
Dixon setlled a bouncing ball on the left side of the penalty area and fired a shot toward goal. It ricocheted off Cicerone and into the net to make it 1-1.
Miami FC took its second lead in the 47th minute. Joshua Perez took a through ball, made a run up the right side and fired a shot on goal. Kevin Silva made the save, but Adonijah Reid knocked in the rebound to make it 2-2.
The Riverhounds answered again in the 54th minute.
Dixon took a long pass from Cicerone on the left wing, took on a defender one on one and rocketed a shot into the top right corner of the net to make it 2-2.
The draw ended a three-match road loasing streak for the Riverhounds, who are tied with Detroit City FC for third place in the USL Championship’s Eastern Conference. They’ll return home next Saturday to host Detroit at 7 p.m. at Highmark Stadium.
