Riverhounds fall to MLS club FC Cincinnati in U.S. Open Cup
The Pittsburgh Riverhounds took an MLS team to extra time but fell 2-0 to FC Cincinnati in the third round of the U.S. Open Cup on Tuesday night.
Alvaro Barreal scored both goals for Cincinnati. The Riverhounds fell to 1-6 all-time against MLS teams, but all six losses have come by either one goal or in extra time.
The Riverhounds had their moments, outshooting Cincinnati 6-3 in the first half, but ran into trouble four minutes into extra time. Barreal drew a penalty call in the 95th minute and converted in the top-right corner of the net to make it 1-0.
He scored again in a two-on-two situation in the 99th minute to make it 2-0.
The U.S. Open Cup is a single-elimination tournament open to all professional and amateur teams affiliated with U.S. Soccer first held in 1914. This year’s tournament is the first since 2019 because of pandemic restrictions.
The Riverhounds return to action at 7 p.m. Saturday against Atlanta United 2 at Highmark Stadium.
