Tanum Nelson scored the first two goals in Pittsburgh Riveters history in a 3-2 win over Flower City 1872 on Saturday in Rochester, N.Y., sending the USL W League club to its first victory.

Lucia Wells also scored for the Riveters (1-0-1), who played to a scoreless draw with Cleveland in the first game in team history last weekend.

Nelson, a junior from Cornell, scored twice in a span of two minutes.

In the 31st minute, Mars graduate Piper Coffield sent a long free kick into the penalty area that was not cleared by Flower City (1-1-0) but was cashed in by Nelson.

In the 32nd minute, Nelson blasted a 25-yard shot in off the crossbar to make it 2-0.

The Riveters ran their lead to 3-0 in the 80th minute when Flower City’s attempted clear of a corner kick found Wells and the North Allegheny graduate buried a shot.

Flower City’s Sam Cipolla scored once in the 83rd minute and again in stoppage time, but the Riveters held on from there.

The Riveters will return to action on the road at Cleveland on Wednesday.
