Seahawks without Pro Bowl CB Devon Witherspoon for Steelers’ home opener
Pro Bowl cornerback Devon Witherspoon was not in uniform for the Seattle Seahawks for Sunday’s game at the Pittsburgh Steelers because of a knee injury.
Witherspoon joined rookie safety Nick Emmanwori (ankle) as starters from Seattle’s secondary who were unavailable for the Steelers home opener at Acrisure Stadium.
It had been previously known that the Steelers would be without two defensive backs who start — cornerback Joey Porter Jr. (hamstring) and safety DeShon Elliott (knee) suffered injuries during last week’s win at the New York Jets.
It had also been previously reported by the Steelers that rookie defensive tackle Derrick Harmon would remain out because of a knee injury suffered during the preseason.
Healthy scratches, no QB3
The Steelers’ healthy scratches announced Sunday were offensive linemen Max Scharping and Andrus Peat and defensive lineman Esezi Otomewo.
The Steelers elected to forgo having an “emergency” No. 3 quarterback in uniform after they placed Skylar Thompson (hamstring) on injured reserve early last week. Logan Woodside was added to the practice squad but was not elevated to the active roster for Sunday’s game. Linebacker Jon Rhattigan — a special teams standout — was a practice-squad elevation for the Steelers against the Seahawks.
Milroe not a worry
If the Steelers spent preparation time this week on a potential package of plays for Seattle rookie quarterback Jalen Milroe, that ended up unnecessary because Milroe was in uniform Sunday merely as the Seahawks’ emergency QB eligible to play only if the Seahawks’ other two quarterbacks suffered an injury.
Seattle’s healthy inactives were linebackers Jared Ivey and Connor O’Toole, offensive lineman Mason Richman and tight end Nick Kallerup.
