Sean Davis could provide help for the Pittsburgh Steelers at free safety after his replacement gave up a long touchdown pass Sunday night against the New England Patriots.
With Davis missing the season opener with an ankle injury, first-year player Kameron Kelly played his first NFL game. Kelly was victimized by a 58-yard touchdown pass from Tom Brady to Phillip Dorsett after the Steelers scored on their first possession of the second half. The long pass gave the Patriots a 27-3 lead.
Davis, entering his second year at free safety after previously playing strong safety, could resume practicing this week in advance of the Steelers’ home opener against the Seattle Seahawks.
Without Davis, the Steelers allowed seven pass plays of 20 yards or longer, including completions of 32 and 44 yards.
“We busted a few things,” coach Mike Tomlin said Tuesday, “and when you bust a few things and play good people, they strike up the band and you’ve got your extra-point block team out.”
Tomlin offered a blunt assessment of Kelly, who was signed as a free agent after playing for the defunct Alliance of American Football in the spring.
“Zero-and-one,” Tomlin said. “He’s got some work to do. We’ve got some work to do – all of us.”
