Decorated Point Park track standout Anna Shields has more regional athlete of the year awards than a relay team has runners.
The senior was named the NAIA Great Lakes Region Women’s Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches’ Association — the fifth time she has garnered the award across the indoor and outdoor seasons.
Shields, who will run in the NAIA outdoor nationals Thursday through Saturday in Gulf Shores, Ala., also has five NAIA national athlete of the year honors.
Shields has been named NAIA Great Lakes Region Athlete of the Year in 2017 (indoor), 2018 (outdoor and cross country), and 2019 (indoor and outdoor). She has been tabbed NAIA National Athlete of the Year in 2017 (outdoor), 2018 (indoor, outdoor and cross country), and 2019 (indoor).
With a time of 2 minutes, 7.06 seconds, she had the No. 1 NAIA ranking (3rd nationally) in the 800-meter run and also has the best NAIA time in the 1,500 meters (4:15.60). She is a national qualifier in those events, plus the 5,000 meters. She is a two-time defending champion in the 1,500 and the returning 800 champion.
Shields has eight NAIA national titles and 13 NAIA All-America honors.
